Tips for Phone English Teachers (to Koreans)

http://jill-des.blogspot.com/, Phone English Teachers, working student, Caloocan City, The Journey

hahha…I’m not really sure if I’m in the right place to give tips & strategies…(not confident again??) but I’d just like to share what I know so far. I’ve been trying to google trying to know some tips & it was futile. No such articles are available in the world wide web. I hope the following might help:

1. To kids or juniors usually about 12-14 years old – try to injest some humor. You should be not too serious in class like a job interviewer. Laughing from time to time isn’t bad right??

2. Having a lively voice also helps s lot. When the teacher sounds bored & sleepy the tendency is for the student to feel the same.

3. Having games sometimes could also encourage the student to participate in class.

4. There’s a 70/30 rule – which means that the student should be talking 70% of the entire conversation while the teacher is only 30%. This means giving them enough time to react & think about what they are saying thoroughly.

*Sometimes this is not strictly followed in cases like when the student is too beginner & only says YES & NO. Giving them the alloted time means like not talking the entire class so beware.

5. Relating the technical topics to the student’s present situation.

For example: The topic is about FUTURE TENSE. You can ask the student to tell you about his/her plans in the nearest future. By this he/she should use future time expressions & “going to” & “will”

6. Knowing the student’s tickling spot can also ensure interactive class. When the student is really interested in KPOP atists songs & fashion it wouldn’t hurt if you do some reaserch & sound as if you you’ve been a fan the whole time. Yeah…sometimes we have to be actors & actresses too..(not necessarily liars)

7. Keeping yourself aware of what’s happening in Korea is also a plus. When you are having a conversation about it, it would sound like you just live in their neighborhood.

8. The more common things you share the more enjoyable class will be.

9. Giving homework gives them a preview of what will be tomorrow’s class be like. They can be able to anticipate & prepare.

10. When the book is too easy you can insert something that might puzzle the student to study even harder.

11. Whe the student seems really good & rarely commits mistakes (there are cases that the teacher has to make corrections before the end of the class – ) tell him so but you can also say that he/mentioned expressed some sentences that can be expressed in a better & more effective ways. They are usually grammatically correct & you have to explain this as well.

For example:
Student: I stayed at home when the rain is falling down.
Better: I stayed at home when it was raining/

The Booming Industry of Phone English Teaching

http://jill-des.blogspot.com/, Phone English Teaching in the Philippines,Online Teachers

working student, Caloocan City, university of Caloocan City
A lot of Filipino English speakers nowadays shift to the blosssoming industry of teaching English to Foreigners mostly to Koreans. It has been gaining the spotlight since 2004. This is due to the fact that callecenter jobs in teletech, Convergys, telus & etc. are really stressful & health-risky. Although the pay is a bit lower when compared. Another reason is that Korea is starting to go global. Most of the employers there require high scores in English Tests like TOEFL, TOEIC, IELTS and many more. They have the option of going to native english speakers like the US, Australia & Canada but in times of economic crisis they resort to going here.
Reasons why:

1. Proximity – Philippines is just roughly 45 minutes travel by plane from South Korea.
2. Inexpensive – the cost is really more affordable compared to the other countries.
3. The cost of living is cheap – there are a lot of dormitory-english schools here. Koreans live in these dorms & at the same time learn English for 1-5 months. The one-night expense at the bar in Korea surges up to 5 thousand pesos while it’s only 500-1,000 pesos here.
4. The quality is almost the same – it depends on how wise you are in choosing the institution to go to.
There are different services in this field.

1. The online teaching (which i’m doing now) – the teacher calls the Korean student (who’s of course in Korea) & have a class which lasts from 10 minutes to 1 hour. Here in our company it’s 10 – 30 minutes. Click Here to learn more about Phone English Teaching. Phone English

Phone English is an old serviced that has existed for quite a long time. Yet it
wasn’t until quite recently that it became the preferred choice for ordinary
households as a method of children’s English language education.

A
mediating agency arranges native English teachers with students, and the latter
call students at a designated time of day. Teachers include Americans, British
nationals, Australians, New Zealanders and Filipinos who don’t speak any Korean
at all.

Moon Young-ho, marketing manager of Times Call, said the market
for phone English has grown significantly in recent years, especially after
President Lee Myung-bak was sworn in in early 2008.

“Phone English is
traditionally well received during times of economic difficulty thanks to its
affordability,” he explained.

The size of the phone-English market in
Korea is difficult to accurately measure, he says. Yet, recalling his four-year
experience in the field, he can say for certain that the market is expanding at
tremendous speed.

“If you type in “phone English” at naver.com, you
get at least 300 entries,” Moon said, referring to his own market research.

It isn’t just traditional English brand names that are expanding their
share. New investors have joined the competition, he said.

The selling
points of phone English are direct engagement between students and teachers,
along with affordability.

“Parents get quite enthusiastic about it.
It’s cheaper than sending the kids to hagwon, private after-school institutes,
yet the quality is the same or better because the teacher is directly engaged
with the children,” Moon said.

“Furthermore, since the session takes
place at home, parents can see their children perform. They may also be briefed
about their children’s performance by the call center’s headquarters,” he said.

Times Call charges average 120,000 won per month for 10-minute daily
phone

2. Man-man Teaching or face-to-face teaching (the latter sound better since the former sound more a bit of gay relationship) The dorm-turned english academies offered by Koreans living here. – they have contacts in Korea & accepts students in their dorms & teach them english. Of course they hire Filipino English teachers.
3. There are companies & pivate individuals who offer home-based Teaching jobs – the convenience of not commuting to the office & just working in your house is also becoming a trend. One famous site for this is the ontue.com.

Wala kang pera pero gusto mong mag-aral??

university of caloocan city, working student, buhay working student, phone english teacher, Philippines, http://ucc-estudyante.blogspot.com/,

            • Do you have the strong desire to improve the quality of your life??
            • Are you willing to find ways to continue your studies?? (college, highschool)
            • Are you hardworking enough to do something about your future??

If your answer is a big YES, then you deserve a chance for scholarships.

Usually when we hear SCHOLARSHIPS we think of some geek & brilliant students who can solve mathematical equations, speak fluent English & top students in their school/class & etc. It somehow intimidates us at times. (Like what happened to me) But scholarships are not all about that. Sometimes ATTITUDE is more important. As long as you have strong DETERMINATION to do something about your life then you deserve to know that there are certain scholarships & opportunities for you.

            Tips:

            1. Find a part-time/full-time jobs.

This seems very difficult considering the schedule but it’s POSSIBLE. You can arrange your schedule to fit your working hours. Sometimes you’d have to drop some subjects. It’s inevitable. It’s better that way than just be a “tambay” & let yourself rot at home doing nothing.

If you really are determined, you wouldn’t mind the tiresome fastfood jobs. Here in Manila, Caloocan to be specific I see schoolmates scattered around Sm Fairview & Robinson. Some are in either Jollibbee, McDonalds or SM Supermarket/hypermarket.

Some also are very innovative that they attend vocational training offered by TESDA (to know more about TESDA, click here) & render their own services like pedicure, manicure & etc. There are also available call center trainings & so many other options.

            2. Scholarships

There are numerous scholarship programs the governmnet is offering to ‘poor but deserving students”:

            • Kabataang Pilipino Inc. – I don’t know much about the specific details but CLICK HERE to find more.
            • The DOST Scholarship program
            • Filipino Iskolar – this is for International & local studies.
            • Pinoy Scholar – provides a list of discounts and scholarships available across the Philippines. This is not exactly a scholarship. This is a site where list of different schools offering discounts in tution fees is listed. There are specific province names in aplhabetical order.

            3. Then there’s the CHED’s (Commission on Higher Education) STUDY NOW PAY LATER PROGRAM – as the name suggests they will loan money to students whose applications are approved & the student have to pay it later, when he/she is already working.

Not bad right?? Here are the specific details:

            STUDY-NOW PAY-LATER PLAN (SNPLP)

            A. LEGAL BASIS

            1. R.A. 8545 amending R.A. 6728

            B. CLIENTELE

            Deserving College Students

            C. PARTICIPATING HIGHER EDUCATION INSTITUTIONS (HEIs)

            Selected Private HEIs

            D. AREAS OF SPECIALIZATION

            Priority Courses

            E. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

            4. With 75 percentile rank or above in the National Secondary Achievement Test (NSAT)
5.Have a weighted average of 2.5 or higher in the last semester in college, if attended any
6.With parents/guardians having a gross annual income of not more than P150,000.00

            F. DOCUMENTARY REQUIREMENTS

            2. High School Report Card (Form 138), for incoming freshmen
            3. Official enrollment certificate and statement of accounts for those with college units
            4. Official report of ratings or certificate of grades for the last semester attended issued by the school registrar or dean, with an average of not lower than 2.5 for those with college units, and
            5. Certification of guarantee of loan by a GSIS/SSS member guarantor

            G. APPLICATION PROCEDURE

            2. Submit the accomplished form together with the required documents to the Registrar’s Office

            G. FINANCIAL BENEFITS

A maximum loan of P 7,250.00 per semester to cover tuition and other school fees

I think this would be all for now. But surely if I’ve heard & seen some scholarships again I will update as soon as I can. I hope this is helpful..You can post questions if you want. I’ll try to answer them to the best of my knowledge & capabilities. Thanks!
